Letter to My Students
Dear Students,
Congratulations on deciding to embark on the thrilling adventure of becoming part of one of the most trusted, respected, and valued healthcare professions. However, as you will soon learn, nursing is more than merely a profession. It is an experience that allows you to give, to receive, to learn, and to grow. It is an outlet of your caring nature and compassionate ways that allow you to make a difference in the lives of others and to appreciate the life of your own. It provides a new lens from which you can view humanity and above all else, discover more about yourself in ways no other profession ever could.
In terms of how this process is going to begin and how your education is going to take place, let me share with you that I am a brand new educator and am so excited to guide you on your journey to success. For me, being a new educator means that I won’t have to struggle with transitioning from the old, traditional ways of teaching to the new contemporary, student-centered paradigm because I haven’t learned any of those habits that need to be broken. It is a fresh start for all of us in which we will learn together by working with each other to understand and appreciate the world of nursing.
My experience of obtaining my master’s degree in nursing education has taught me the value of an innovative teaching approach in which the focus is on the students and learning is fun. Together, we will be creative. From the teaching strategies I select to the products of learning you produce, creativity will be at the core of all we do! Learning will be facilitated in my classroom by getting involved with your colleagues for group projects and assignments in which you will learn the value of collaborative teamwork and be proud of what you will accomplish together. Case studies will be presented to provide real-life scenarios and examples of a variety of nursing concepts in which you will apply principles of evidence-based nursing practice to discuss what the impact of the nurse’s role is in every situation. One way in which we will use technology consists of a student response system to encourage participation and periodically assess your learning while allowing you to feel safe and comfortable in doing so.
With that being said, be prepared for an active learning experience and engaging learning opportunities. Be ready for humor to be infused throughout our time together to not only make learning even more fun but to also aid in committing what we learn to memory so that it may be retained for future use. What you can also expect from me, your course facilitator, is a dedicated, caring, and supportive resource who will be available to help you along through your ups and downs. I will be committed to your success by providing regular, honest, and thoughtful feedback so that you may always reach your fullest potential in my class. Lastly, I promise to provide a lively, educational, and technology-rich environment in which you will be sure to enjoy our time together while you gain a deeper and more meaningful understanding of nursing. Let the fun begin!
