Creativity in the Classroom
Creativity in the classroom is one of the foundational building blocks of an interactive, innovative, and engaging classroom as it allows for active learning strategies to be applied and for students to get involved. Effective classrooms call for non-traditional ways of learning which means less teacher-centered lecturing with PowerPoints and more student-centered, fun activities. In order to apply various fun and meaningful learning activities, teachers must use their creativity to develop and discover different ways to bring life into the classroom and energize the learners.
For me, I plan to use a great deal of creativity in my classroom because I believe creativity is the root of active learning which not only is necessary for effective teaching but also naturally motivates the students to be engaged in the classroom and be involved in their learning. I will first model creativity by the strategies that I choose to implement and share my own ideas related to the various concepts and then I will promote students’ creativity through encouragement of sharing their ideas and praising the unique qualities of their projects. Additionally, I plan to utilize humor as a creative strategy throughout the course to make learning fun, maintain the attention of the students, and as a way to help students learn and retain information. It would not be used in sarcastic ways or with individual students, but rather in a generalized, wholesome manner relating to the content to facilitate learning. By infusing humor into the classroom, laughs and smiles will be shared which will help students feel more comfortable, be open to learning, and will bring both enthusiasm and optimism into the classroom. My hope is that by incorporating humor into my teaching strategies, it will strengthen the bond of the classroom and truly enhance students’ learning. Whether it’s using funny stories or examples, analogies or puns, bringing laughter to the classroom will not only make it a more fun and lively environment but will also promote learning in a creative way. Students will hopefully be eager to come to class, eager to interact and participate in class, and most importantly, eager to learn with each other.
By establishing a creative classroom, a fun and welcoming environment, and utilizing humor to make learning fun and ensure effective teaching takes place, students will be sure to not only remember the important material learned in class but also reflect on the positive experience of being a student in my classroom.
