Deep Learning
Deep learning refers to the acquisition of comprehensive, meaningful, and long-lasting learning that will carry learners farther and shape their thoughts, decisions, and actions in a more significant manner than any type of superficial or “shallow” learning ever could. Additionally, it allows for the transfer of information that provides greater insight for the learner and can latch on to and enhance the learner’s knowledge base, skill set, and belief or value system. Deep learning refers to more than just simple ideas or the memorization of concrete facts. It requires active participation in learning course concepts and is fueled by the motivation and drive of the learner.
Due to the many benefits that deep learning provides, it may behoove teachers to decrease the quantity of topics discussed in class so that teachers and learners can focus more on the quality of what is being learned. For a teacher to encourage students to strive for the acquisition of the meaning of various nursing concepts reflects an educator that understands the unlimited abilities and opportunities that will become available to students as a result of their deep learning, and launch them into prosperous and engaging careers. For this, educators must make every effort when developing learner objectives to incorporate strategies that will support students in the attainment of deep learning. Class activities must be interactive and student centered. Providing a dynamic and engaging learning environment will prime students to be successful key players in the professional healthcare environment. Learning assessment and evaluation strategies must be selected based on the determination of which strategies will force students to reflect on how they learn the course material which ultimately will lead to student attainment of deeper understanding.
With the drive that is required for the achievement of deep learning comes the characteristic of being a life-long learner which is a quality that nursing professionals are expected to possess. Therefore, for educators to insist that students have an appreciation for deep learning, the groundwork is laid for these same students to link this type of appreciation to the reason behind why they choose to then become life-long learners. However, for students to first understand the importance of grasping the meaning and impact of various nursing concepts, rather than just the basics and simple facts, educators must provide learner objectives and activities that will facilitate this type of framework to thrive. This will then allow students to later become leaders in their field and invaluable resources to their colleagues due to their passion and desire for life-long deep learning.
