Clinical Learning
As I enact the role of the clinical nurse educator, the qualities I wish to embrace and strengthen to bring the best out of my teaching abilities and ensure the greatest learning experience occurs for my students include qualities such as patience, passion, dedication, honesty, and confidence. As a novice clinical nurse educator, I have to be realistic and honest with both myself and my students regarding my strengths and weaknesses that will affect my ability to teach to the expected level of my students. My desire for receiving continuous feedback regarding what I am doing well and what could be done better will fuel my motivation and determination for providing that formative type of feedback for my students as they strive to continuously improve alongside of me.
Additionally, I understand that patience is a necessary quality to have as an educator. This includes not only patience with my students in the clinical setting but also patience with myself as I understand it takes a significant amount of time, practice, and experience before expertise of that role can be achieved. For this I will be patient with myself as I discover through my own experiences and reflections in addition to the insight provided by others, what works well and what doesn’t work well and allow that type of evaluation to be the constant, underlying motor of my teaching practice. I will utilize my background in pediatric intensive care to instill the common nursing behaviors and skills that are present in any setting, especially as they relate to patient safety and advocacy. I expect that the more I teach, the more I will understand and realize how much more I still have to learn. Both nursing practice and nursing education are continuously changing and for this I will have to be adaptable, eager, and innovative in my own ways to remain a strong clinical educator. Patience with my students involves understanding the various responsibilities, obligations, and unique needs each student brings with them to the classroom which will require careful attention on my part to figure out how I can best support each individual student, especially as to how it relates to their clinical performances.
During the most challenging times of my development as a clinical educator, I will remain confident in my abilities to succeed because above all else, I have the passion required to persevere through any challenge that any type of educational storm may present. The passion I have for the nursing profession and the education of my students will be evidenced by my adherence to the details of each creative and intricately developed lesson plan, attention to the values, needs, and contributions of my students, and willingness to be available to my students to offer as much coaching and support as possible all while ensuring that patients in the clinical setting in which we will be practicing will continue to receive the best quality of care possible. The passion I have for my profession in nursing education will also be evident in the careful and thoughtful evaluation of each of my students as well as through the dedication I will demonstrate for my desire to remain as current and up to date on the latest nursing practice and trends as possible. Through this, I will be an example of what students should aim to be like in their professional life and serve as dedicated, life-long learners.
Lastly, each of these qualities will require that I remain an approachable faculty member in order to ensure students feel comfortable coming to me with questions or concerns, especially in the clinical setting, and will be able to trust that I will provide my most sincere and thoughtful guidance as possible. By strengthening each of these qualities and building on my style of being a personable and interactive educator, I hope my future students will have a value of confidence instilled in them that will allow each and every one of them to branch out and become innovators of their time, attentive patient advocates, and above all else, safe and competent care providers to any population of patients and in any health care setting.
